"Well, then, that makes everything just fine," the boss went on. "After you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother's funeral, she stopped in to see you." A person can survive almost everything except death. Better death than dishonor. Death and the grave make no distinction of persons. Death cannot kill what never dies. Death during adolescence feels unfair. We're young. We're invincible. Death is supposed to come with old age. When death breaks into our lives and steals our innocence, its finality leaves us unnaturally older. There are too many elderly young people. Death for us all, but his own death to each. Death is a black camel which kneels at every man's gate. Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time. . . It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other. Death is but death, and all in time shall die. Death is deaf and will hear no denial. Death is God's way of telling you not to be such a wise guy. Death is life's way of telling you you're fired. Death is not a period but a comma in the story of life. Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. Death is when eternity becomes a single dreamless nights sleep. Death rides with the drinking driver. Don't be afraid of death so much as an inadequate life. Every man knows when his life began. . . If I did not exist in the past, why should I, or could I, exist in the future? The purpose of man is like the purpose of the pollywog-to wiggle along as far as he can without dying, or, to hang onto life until death takes him.
